PSHE and RSE

Children at SchoolAt Wombridge Primary School, we deliver a curriculum which is accessible to all and maximises the development of every child. It will give them confidence to tackle many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up and to understand and appreciate diversity. We provide our children with opportunities to develop their sense of self-worth; learn about rights and responsibilities and to play a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community. As a result of this, they will become healthier, more independent and responsible members of society.
Our PSHE Curriculum is a whole school thematic approach, so that all year groups will be working on the same themes at the same time. This whole school approach allows teachers to plan and build a spiral programme of learning year on year allowing children to build on what they know and deepen their understanding.
We currently follow the Jigsaw scheme of work to deliver the PSHE curriculum which meets the statutory requirements and is streamed into these 3 core themes:
· Health and Well-being
· Relationships
· Living in the Wider World

The PSHE curriculum that we have at Wombridge enables us to help children develop their aspirations and nurture their individuality. Through topics such as ‘being me in my world’ and ‘dreams and goals’ children begin to develop their self-identity and worth as well as recognising their place in the wider world.  During the ‘dreams and goals’ units, children explore the future that they could have and are able to hold high aspirations. It endeavours to provide realistic views and develop skills in resilience and planning. The unit also helps our children to look at financial capability in real life contexts in relation to their dreams.

In addition to the Jigsaw programme, we work closely with the Maths Coordinators to deliver a series of lessons about financial capability as we feel this is beneficial for our children. These lessons help the children to develop their financial capability skills so that they can be make sound financial decisions for themselves, make informed choices, begin to learn how to budget and look at the benefits of saving money. We aim to have workshops delivered to the upper key stage two classes to support them in their understanding of financial matters.

Celebrating ‘difference’ and ‘relationships’ units are taught during discreet PSHE lessons, but as a school it is what underpins all areas of school life. It teaches our children to be understanding and accepting of others as well as challenging intolerance of others. Children are given opportunities to reflect on themselves, the local community, and the wider world.  The ‘relationships’ units support celebrating difference. These units allow our children to explore themselves and introduces children to different family structures and what a ‘healthy’ relationship looks like.

Staff are supported in helping to challenge stereotypes and training is provided to ensure that staff are confident in how to deal with specific issues that are relevant to our school. The children are encouraged to be open minded with their aspirations and to challenge historic gender specific roles in society.

Our Relationships and Sex Education (RSHE) is taught across the curriculum. Through our RSHE lessons, we aim to

  • Provide a framework in which sensitive discussions can take place
  • Help pupils understand the value of family life, the implications of parenthood and the need for the proper care of all young things.
  • Prepare pupils for puberty, and give them an understanding of sexual development and the importance of health and hygiene in an age appropriate way.
  • Help pupils develop feelings of self-respect, confidence and empathy
  • Create a positive culture around issues of sexuality and relationships
  • Teach pupils the correct vocabulary to describe themselves and their bodies
  • Raise and promote positive self esteem
  • Help pupils develop their skills and confidence in making decisions, communication, assertiveness, self-expression, respect for self and others
  • Help pupils communicate and understand their feelings and emotions
  • Provide pupils with skills necessary to keep themselves happy and safe
  • Challenge media stereotypes, oppression and prejudice and promote equal opportunities
  • Explain the meaning of words in a sensible and factual way, using correct names for body parts and functions
  • Develop the confidence to seek help, support and advice

Our RSHE curriculum is about the emotional, social and cultural development of pupils, and involves learning about relationships, sexual health, sexuality, healthy lifestyles, diversity and personal identity, as pupils progress from the primary to secondary phase of school.  It involves a combination of sharing information, and exploring issues and values, which our pupils understand through accessible education.

Whole School approach

It is our belief that RSHE is the responsibility of all staff and is integral to teaching a board and balanced curriculum, educating the whole child and is the taught component of ‘Keeping Children Safe in Education’. Pupils’ questions will be responded to by staff (teaching and non-teaching staff) in a straightforward manner. Factual, simple information will be provided, using correct terminology for body parts and functions, appropriate to the age and maturity of the child.

School staff recognise the importance of responding to pupils’ questions as part of the taught RSHE curriculum and as they arise

Assessment

At Wombridge we utilise a range of strategies to assess the children’s personal, social and health development. This is done formatively throughout the day. We assess the unit ‘Healthy Me’ through a formal assessment.

Extra-Curricular Activities

We endeavour to enrich and embed the PSHE curriculum and the school ethos by promoting it throughout the school year. We lead several whole school events to raise awareness, develop understanding and promote diversity. We promote and provide anti stigma opportunities surrounding challenging stereotypes as well as careers and aspirations.

FIRST AID

We use the British Red Cross First aid champions resource to teach first aid education , which is now on the RSE and health curriculum in England. We use it to teach the skills children and young people need to save a life.
